Introducing MTSS at Our School
This year, we are beginning to implement a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) - a school-wide, evidence-based framework designed to ensure that every student receives the right teaching and support, at the right time.
MTSS draws on decades of research into how children learn and how teachers can best meet the diverse needs of all learners. It is a proactive and preventative approach that combines high-quality instruction for all students with additional, increasingly intensive layers of support for those who require it. While MTSS can be applied to a wide range of academic and wellbeing areas, our initial focus will be on building strong, consistent systems that can be sustained over time in the areas of literacy and behaviour support.
How MTSS Works
Using Data to Guide Support
Teachers will use universal screening assessments several times each year to monitor student progress. This data enables us to identify students who may need additional support, evaluate the effectiveness of our teaching strategies, and make informed, team-based decisions about changes to instruction or interventions.
Building Teacher Expertise
A key feature of MTSS is ongoing professional learning. Our teachers will engage in continuous development to strengthen their instructional practice in literacy and behaviour support, ensuring that the strategies we use align with the latest research.
By adopting MTSS, we aim to create a responsive, equitable, and effective system where no student slips through the cracks. Through evidence-based teaching, timely intervention, and collaborative problem-solving, over time we can provide every child at BPS with the opportunity to thrive — academically, socially, and behaviourally.
