COOKING WITH MATHS

What did you learn about maths and what principle did you  investigate?

Proportions, ratio, measuring, fractions, calculating.  We had 375grams of chocolate but we only needed 200grams.  We worked out that half the block was 187.5 grams.  Then we weighed an extra 2cubes which worked out to be 14grams.  This made our total of approx. 200grams.

COOKING WITH SCIENCE

What did you learn about maths and what principle did you  investigate?

Change of state.  When we mixed the sugar with the heated butter we saw the sugar dissolve and realised you could no longer see the sugar grains therefore it had changed state from a solid to a liquid.

THINKING CURRICULUM

What did our group find out about the Thinking Curriculum especially Habits of Mind?

ONLINE TEAM WORK

What did we learn about computer technology, group work, working online with partners?

Managing impulsivity - We checked through a number of recipe books until we found one that we had all of the ingredients for before we started cooking.

Taking responsible risks - we used pecans instead of walnuts because that was what was available.  We melted the butter in the oven because it was too hard.

Responding with wonderment and awe - we encouraged and praised each other for efforts.  We were impressed with our results, as were our lunch guests.

There needed to be more ongoing communication with our partner group, particularly before we started to make sure that our recipe's suit.

We needed to work out our roles and responsibilities before we started.
