COOKING WITH MATHS

What did you learn about maths and what principle did you  investigate?

Addition,division,estimation & rounding off & money.

Our group spent considerable time considering the cost of individual items and working out how much each item would cost.  By firstly rounding off the cost of individual items we were able to estimate how much the meal would cost for 4 or 8 people.  It was a real life application of the maths that is all around us.

COOKING WITH SCIENCE

What did you learn about maths and what principle did you  investigate?

Recycling.  At Bayswater Secondary College in the science department we have an axolotl (Mexican Walking Fish) that feeds on a delicious diet of  worms.  There is also a worm farm at the school that requires vegetable matter for the worms to thrive.  Therefore our cooking group was sustaining an entire food chain by sending the leftover vegetable matter to the worm farm which would help the worms to grow plump making a wonderful meal for the axolotl.

THINKING CURRICULUM

What did our group find out about the Thinking Curriculum especially Habits of Mind?

ONLINE TEAM WORK

What did we learn about computer technology, group work, working online with partners?

Listening to others- With understanding and Empathy

Our group functioned very well together with a number of diverse thinkers in the group but we were focussed on the task at hand and enjoyed each others' company.

Flexibility  -  We had decided to make a chicken dish during the preparation time however when it came time to select ingredients the chicken was already spoken for.  Beef was an excellent alternative.

We liaised with our online group using the video conferencing link which was connected to where they were cooking.
